The RTPI has begun a comprehensive review of the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), a key step in ensuring the Institute continues to support high-quality, inclusive routes to Chartered Membership.
What we’re doing
There are four stages of the APC review:
Research: We are reviewing the current data we have from previous consultations with members who have been through the APC submission rounds. We will also conduct new primary research with various stakeholder groups
Discovery: Based on our research and consultations, we will consider and explore potential changes to the APC structure.
Consultation: We will consult with the membership on any changes or proposals to the APC structure. The final proposals will be approved by the RTPI’s Trustee Board
Implementation: We will develop a comprehensive implementation plan, ensuring that candidates are supported through any changes we make.
We are currently in the research and discovery phases of the review. This initial stage will focus on gathering evidence, understanding member experiences, and identifying how the APC can best reflect the realities of modern planning practice.
Why this work matters
The APC is central to demonstrating professional capability and reinforcing trust in the planning profession. This review provides an opportunity to:
-
Ensure the process reflects contemporary planning skills and knowledge
-
Improve accessibility and inclusivity across different entry routes
-
Better support candidates at different career stages
By taking a forward-looking approach, we aim to make sure the APC remains relevant, robust and supportive of future planning professionals.
How the review will progress
Once the initial research phase is complete, we will move into engagement with members and stakeholders to explore emerging ideas and gather feedback to inform the next stage of the review.
Get involved
Input from members, employers and assessors will be a key part of shaping the review. There will be opportunities to contribute as the work progresses, and we will share updates and ways to get involved over the coming months.
