NAREC Toolkit

07-Sep-10

The National Renewables Energy Centre (Narec) are releasing a free toolkit to assist North East local government, architects and planners with issues of sustainable buildings. It will be launched in Durham on Wednesday the 29th September. This toolkit is made up of two parts;

1. Sustainability guidance for North East buildingsThis document explains the policy requirements, giving am overview of the current legislation relevant to North East England. It also provides guidance on the suitability of technologies in different situations, helping users make informed decisions about renewable energy installations.

2. Carbon Mixer North East v2.0This software, developed by BG&A, shows the financial, energy, and carbon benefits of installing a range of micro-renewable technologies across a spectrum of building types. The impact of changing the energy supply is displayed in a series of responsive graphs, while results are available in a report format.

Using this tool will enable users to quickly assess the energy credentials of developments using a consistent methodology. The Toolkit is intended to ensure that developers adhere to new planning regulations on carbon and energy, by giving a simple common language to all involved in the process of designing, planning and building new developments. It is hoped this will help with the difficult decision of choosing the most appropriate micro-renewable energy solution. Launch and Toolkit training sessionsThe toolkit will be launched at Durham County Council’s Rivergreen facility in an event on the morning of Wednesday the 29th September.

Narec will be running a number of micro-renewables toolkit training sessions across the north east following the launch. A map with directions is attached. The micro-renewables toolkit will be available, free of charge to all local authorities within North East England, and other selected not for profit organisations.
