Derek Mckenzie

Derek Mckenzie 

Derek graduated from Dundee University in Town and Regional Planning and from Durham University in Environmental Impact assessment. His career has spanned 30 years, the majority of which has been in the public sector, with the latter half at Chief Planner level. He has also worked as Head of Planning with the Dubai based master developer "Nakheel" leading on a number of major projects including the Waterfront City and Palm Jumeriah. He has been a consultant since 2011 where his time is split between public sector interim leadership, and helping clients through the planning system with a variety of development proposals. His interim work focusses on the creation of fir for purpose planning services, with a specialisms in transformation and spatial planning, and has worked with a number of Councils to help them avoid government intervention for failure to produce Local Plans. 

He has a passion for overseas planning, with clients in the Middle East, Russia and China. He is a member of the RTPI's International Committee and he is also a member of the Independent Consultants Network Steering Group, which represents the views of the RTPI's independent planning consultants. He has a passion for working with school pupils and students in influencing their career choices as a Schools Ambassador, and has given a lot of time in the past to Planning Aid. Derek Joins the Yorkshire Branch as a RAC member with the lead for inter professional development.
