Bryan Smith: Chartered Town Planner. Honours Degree in Geography (London University) and post-graduate qualification in Town & Country Planning (Birmingham College of Art and Design/Aston University).
Planning in the public sector with Birmingham City, Redditch New Town Development Corporation, Bristol City and the former Avon County. In private practice as a Planning Director with Carter Commercial Developments and law firms in London (McGuiness Finch) and Bristol (Clark Willmott). From 1999 in own practice specialising in retailing, shipping, and renewable energy, with clients such as the Bristol Port Company, Lidl, REIA etc. In 2011-12 acted as a part-time Consultant at Jones Lang LaSalle in Bristol. For many years associated with Bristol Polytechnic/University of the West of England as lecturer and examiner. For over two years was a Research Fellow/Lecturer in the Institute for Local, Regional and National Planning (ORL Institut) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland.
Active member of the RTPI nationally (Council, editorial panel of the Planner, various topic groups) and regionally (Chair SWRTPI, Programme Officer, newsletter editor, study tour organiser (Berlin), policy officer etc). Awarded RTPI Outstanding Service Award 2014.
Has published on such topics as retailing, the development industry, negotiating, conflict management, and European planning.
