Dawn de Vries is a Principal Planning Officer for Sedgemoor District Council, determining planning applications for major development including Urban Extensions, Schools, Community Facilities and Economic Development in the West of the District. Having responsibility for a case load; managing the Area Team, and overseeing the registration process - there are constant interesting demands to balance each day. Starting her career as a Modern Apprentice in "Business and Administration" for the Isle of Wight County Council Planning Department, Dawn grew through the experience to Senior Planner: this underlines her full support for the new expansive ranges of apprenticeships available, including in Town and County Planning. Dawn's next challenge was to balance work, family and her day release to Oxford Brookes University where she gained her Masters in Spatial Planning. After becoming RTPI accredited, she and her family moved 'off isle' to Somerset in the summer of 2015. Here she progressed from a Senior into Principal role, and last year gained a CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership at the University of Somerset.
Dawn became involved with the RTPI SW Regional Activities Committee following an RTPI event over three years ago and - by working with other volunteers promoting Planning Aid - has organised and delivered CPD events for volunteers, and worked with Plymouth University to determine awareness and outreach opportunities. Dawn was on the judging panel for the RTPI SW Awards for Planning Excellence and chaired many events in 2019 in preparation for what will be a bumper year in 2020. Alongside all this, she still manages to enjoy fun times with her husband, 3 children, dog and cats.
