Challenges in Sustainability Appraisal/Strategic Environmental Assessment SA/SEA) within the UK relate to: recent legal judgements, statements made by planning inspectors or the courts in regards to the role of SA/SEA, and updated guidance on assessments.
Through a combination of expert trainer input, discussion and group work, you will:
- Refresh knowledge on the SA/SEA process and legal requirements
- Take a critical look at how SA/SEA has been undertaken alongside local development plan-making in practice, including Neighbourhood/Community plans
- Learn about current issues in SEA/SA
- Understand current and emerging issues in HRA (Habitat Regulations Assessment)

Our trainer - Taran Livingston
Taran is an expert in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA),
sustainability appraisal (SA) and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA)
having worked on over 30 SAs and 15 HRAs of all types of development
plans since the introduction of statutory requirements for SA/SEA and
Taran also has extensive experience of strategic planning, including
undertaking evidence base studies, plan preparation and strategic site
assessments. Taran is an experienced trainer having provided bespoke
training on SA/SEA and HRA to Natural England, Natural Resources Wales,
Environment Agency and Local Planning Authority officers as well as guest lectures to Planning Masters students at various universities.
This course compliments the RTPI Learn module Planning for Climate Change.
