Coming up from a Geography background during my bachelor degree, I equipped myself with a sense of spatial skills and learnt to appreciate the importance of man-land relationship. I was then introduced by my academic advisor to urban planning after the completion of my thesis related to the influence of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model on the development of Hong Kong. So I pursued my Master of Urban Planning from the Hong Kong University in 2007. In the planning school, I was so much impressed by not only the basic spatial planning skills in drawing up development plans, but also how the community participation has been so essential to the planning system in Hong Kong nowadays.

I was fortunate enough to join the Planning Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government as a Town Planning Graduate in 2009. This graduate trainee programme has provided me with a great deal of experience ranging from the statutory planning matters, development planning and control, and collaboration with different stakeholders. In June 2012, I rejoined the Planning Department again as an Assistant Town Planner.

My tips for upcoming candidates are:

  • Obtain advice from your mentor or more established members regularly on your L-APC submission.
  • The planning skills or knowledge you have learnt or gained from the experience should be more elaborated in the Professional Competence Statement. Never forget to mention how you have observed the RTPI Code of Professional Conducts in delivering your work.
  • For Professional Development Plan, be specific on the strategies for improvement on your skills or knowledge, for instance, the course you are going to attend, the duration of the course, your target areas for improvement, etc.   
  • Set out a realistic timeframe for L-APC submission, say 3 to 4 months. Do not rush your submission. Allow some time for proofreading and discussion with your employers/ex-employers/mentors on your planning experience gained.
