Course Aim
Community engagement is at the heart of planning and the more effective it is, the better the outcome for everyone. In this new masterclass, you will explore lessons learnt from experience to date and how to engage with groups effectively to achieve good planning outcomes.
Through a combination of expert trainer input, discussion and group work, you will:
- Understand the importance of community engagement as part of the planning process;
- Discover a range of tools and techniques for effective working with communities;
- Evaluate a variety of approaches to community engagement to select the most appropriate one for your projects.

Our trainer - Hannah Barter
Hannah Barter MRTPI is a Director of Urban Vision Enterprise CIC and has 14 years’ experience in planning and community development, working in the public, private and third sectors. Her professional experience includes Planning, arboriculture, urban design, community engagement and environmental education.
Hannah provides advice and support to various local authorities, community groups, and parish and town councils on planning, heritage, urban design, and community empowerment. Hannah was awarded the Chesterton Zoe Dawson Award in 2002-03 for her work on urban green spaces with Birmingham City Council. She also works as an Associate with Staffordshire University on the development and delivery of heritage and community engagement projects and is a MELA Associate.
