East of England Garden Cities Principles in Practice

Wednesday, 20 May 2020 at 9:30AM - 5:00PM
Council Chamber, Council Offices The Campus Welwyn Garden City AL8 6AE
RTPI East of England

The government has published regulations to boost delivery of housing by handing power to councils to establish New Town Development Corporations and plans for a new generation of Garden Communities are developing at pace. The Government is already supporting 48 Garden Towns and Villages (as at October 2019) and is seeking to broaden its programme of support. The potential for five new Garden Cities has already been identified in the ‘brain belt’ between Oxford and Cambridge and a new Garden Communities Prospectus is awaited.

We will be exploring key questions: How will this new legislation unlock vital house building through the Garden Communities? What opportunities exist in the long term and how will the public and private sector roles change in the delivery of new communities? How can we create communities where people want to live and work now and in the future? How might we scale up delivery? How can we 'lock in' design quality and long term governance and stewardship? What lessons can be learned from the most developed Garden Community projects?
