Course Aim

This new masterclass has been developed by the RTPI  to address the new Planning Act in Scotland. We will walk you through the practical implications of the legislation as it evolves. This will include the new regulations on performance, the introduction of statutory Chief Planning Officers and the implications for development management.

Through a combination of expert trainer input, discussion and group work, you will:

  • Be updated on the new Planning Act;
  • Understand the national and regional context for planning;
  • Consider the impact of the act on the decision making and development planning process;
  • Receive practical advice on implementing legislation;
  • Share best practice with others in the planning profession

Our trainers: 

Craig McLaren

 

Craig is Director of Scotland and Ireland in the Royal Town Planning Institute. In this role he leads the Institute’s policy, public affairs and member services work in Scotland and Ireland. He is also responsible for the RTPI’s approaches to professional standards including ethics, conduct and discipline, and, is the lead Director for its work in its English Regions.  Prior to this Craig set up and managed the Scottish Centre for Regeneration in Scottish Government and its agency Communities Scotland, as its Director. 

He has also been Chief Executive of the Scottish Urban Regeneration Forum (SURF); Scottish Planning Policy Officer with the RTPI; and a planner and economic development officer for the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Craig is a Fellow of the RTPI, a Fellow of the RSA and an Academician of the Institute of Urbanism.  He has also been appointed by Scottish Ministers to chair the National Walking Strategy Delivery Forum and previously sat on the Boards of Scotland’s Towns Partnership, Resilient Scotland, Built Environment Forum Scotland, Greenspace Scotland and the Jim Boyack Memorial Trust.

Kate Houghton

 

Kate Houghton is a Chartered Town Planner. As Policy & Practice Officer at RTPI Scotland she works to ensure that planners have the policy and legislative framework they need to be effective place-makers, and to promote best practice in the profession.

Previously she has worked for Junto al Barrio, a Chilean NGO focused on delivering community regeneration in some of the country’s most vulnerable urban neighbourhoods, and in policy advocacy for the Campaign to Protect Rural England. All of these roles have helped develop a keen understanding of the importance of community involvement and leadership in placemaking.
