In professional services, your product is often a report: a planning statement, a contract, or a strategy document.
Does your work communicate what you want it to? How can you make it more powerful? Good grammar and spelling are important - but so are structure and clarity.
In this session, we use real documents and industry feedback to consider common mistakes and how participants’ work could be improved. We will talk about structure, tone, grammar and how people read.
Attend this interactive workshop to get valuable insight on how to effectively compose and write your content, adapting it to the situation and the audience, and enhancing your professional reputation.
Through a combination of expert input, discussion and group work, you will learn:
- How to more effectively collate and analyse a large amount of information (LPs, evidence base, other policies and technical reports);
- How to succinctly draw out the key points;
- How to develop an effective structure for planning reports;
- Tips on the do’s and don’ts of writing well; and
- How to use emails as an effective communication method.
Bob Phillips is a town planner and urban designer with over ten years’ experience working with the public, private and academic sectors in a variety of roles. He is the Director of planning and urban design at consultancy Urban Imprint, a multidisciplinary planning and design consultancy in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Bob is also professional practice lecturer in urban design at the University of Manchester where he focused on the interface between planning and urban design and the communication of complex design proposals. He has volunteered with the RTPI in the region for the last 10 years, holding the position of regional chair between 2016 and 2018. Through his career, Bob has been directly involved in assisting communities to prepare their own Neighbourhood Plans which has been a rewarding, but often frustrating process requiring the complex world of planning to be presented to communities in a plain English style. He and his team have a strong track record in undertaking planning training for local members, parish councils and other environmental professionals.
