The future of travel – Dilemmas for integrated planning in an era of change
- Delivered by Greg Marsden, Professor of Transport Governance at the University of Leeds
We are delighted to be taking our most popular event in the 2018 RTPI Yorkshire calendar to Sheffield Town Hall and are thrilled that our keynote address will be delivered by Professor Marsden.
With society undergoing a major period of change from a combination of economic, social, institutional and technological factors, Professor Marsden will be exploring the impact this has had on where, how and how frequently we travel - which in turn impacts on land use and planning.
For the past 20 years the amount we travel has been in decline (however measured). This is particularly true for under 60s, with travel for younger people declining most and travel for older people rising.
There are some important spatial variations but this is not a simple story of urban declines versus rural growth.
In this wide-ranging talk, the findings of a year-long Commission on the Future of Travel Demand will be shared. Through this the importance of understanding how shopping and work and the other activities we take part in are changing will be explored.
The talk will look at what this means for integrated planning today but also for the future, touching on autonomous vehicles and integrated mobility companies. Professor Marsden will discuss why policy will have to adapt to many of these trends, but can also shape some of them.
The networking event will also include the presentation of our RTPI 2018 Yorkshire Awards for Planning Excellence.
Come and help us celebrate our planning excellence awards as well as meet up with friends and colleagues with an informal networking drinks and canape reception attended by the 2018 RTPI President John Acres and RTPI Yorkshire Chair Richard Wood.
