Course Aim

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations were amended in 2017 changing the legal basis of EIA and adjusting the approach that needs to be taken by local authorities, statutory consultees, developers and their consultants. This course is built around the procedural steps a local planning authority undertakes in enabling and reviewing the EIA process and will enable you to identify which developments need EIA, the topics to be scoped covered and will teach you how to identify and assess significant environmental effects of the proposals.

The EIA process can feel complex - involving screening, scoping, assessment, evaluation and monitoring - the course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and understanding needed to approach each step with confidence.

By attending this masterclass will help you will enhance your confidence and understanding of EIA, its purpose and how to deliver the different stages of the process.

Through a combination of expert trainer input, discussion and group work, you will:

  • Build you confidence across the EIA process and be clear on what you need to do at each step (screening, scoping, assessment and evaluation).
  • Enhance your understanding of England's EIA Regulations and the formal screening and scoping stages.
  • Gain valuable hints and tips on the competent expert and sufficient expertise requirements around the Environmental Statement and decision notice.
  • Recognise the need for proportionate assessment and acquire insight into how to deliver it across the fundamentals of assessment and mitigation practice.
