Planning in Dubai

Thursday, 26 January 2017 at 5:00PM - 7:00PM
Rose Bowl, Leeds Beckett University, Portland Crescent, Leeds LS1 3HB
RTPI Yorkshire

DubaiDon't miss this exciting opportunity to learn about planning in a middle eastern country which promotes itself as an advanced global city and is known for its ultramodern architecture as well as its luxury shopping.

Derek Mckenzie. MRTPI, was appointed as Head of Planning with Nakheel in 2008, the largest master developer in the world, famous for its ambitious projects such as Palm Jumeirah, the World Islands and the Waterfront City. He served out a 3 year contract, surviving the economic downturn which some economists felt would never impact on Dubai. In that time he worked with a truly multicultural team with over 50 nationalities, covering master planning and regulatory control for 8 separate projects under the Dubai World banner.

At this RTPI Yorkshire International Network event, Derek will talk to us about his Dubai planning experiences at the top level. He will cover the procedural and technical aspects of planning applied, including some interesting lessons learned, and will also provide an overview of what it is like to embark on a career in planning in Dubai, with advice on how to avoid some of the pitfalls. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

Derek now runs his own multi disciplinary town planning practice (MTP McKenzie Town Planning Ltd) based in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, where he divides his time between supporting clients on a wide case load, including Neighbourhood Planning; and interim management as a Chief Planning Officer all over the country based on his considerable senior management experience in the public sector.
