Government funding takes RTPI bursary scheme to new level

20 March 2018

The RTPI's flagship postgraduate student bursary scheme converting undergraduates to planning has received a major financial boost from the Government.

“Planners play a key role in helping this country deliver new homes, boosting economic growth, and creating vibrant places to live.

That is why we are encouraging the best talent into the profession, and I know the RTPI bursary scheme will make a terrific contribution.”

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has allocated a grant of £345,000 over three years to take the Future Planners Bursary Scheme to the next level, following significant engagement from the Institute and a competitive bid for funding.

The scheme targets students from any discipline including law, politics, geography or architecture to choose planning as a career. The award is available to students applying for an RTPI-accredited university planning Masters course.

The new Government funding will transform the programme, increase its availability and double the amount of the bursary to £2,000 per student.

Housing Minister Dominic Raab said:

“Planners play a key role in helping this country deliver new homes, boosting economic growth, and creating vibrant places to live.

“That is why we are encouraging the best talent into the profession, and I know the RTPI bursary scheme will make a terrific contribution.”

John Acres, RTPI President, said:

“The Government’s generous support of the scheme is testament to the value of planners and to the quality of planning education in Britain. Crucially, it will enable the Institute to continue its efforts to ensure a healthy pipeline of planners.

“The bursary scheme has been a fantastic success with students and a true partnership between the RTPI, universities, and the public and private sectors.”

Success so far

The RTPI Future Planners bursary scheme has run since 2015-16. The scheme supports students on accredited postgraduate conversion degrees (1-year Master’s degrees with full accreditation).

Over 125 students have benefited from the scheme so far. A number of private sector firms have supported the scheme over the past few years including Barton Willmore and Pegasus Planning.

This new funding will be made available to accredited universities in England.  The Institute will be discussing support with the devolved administrations.

Degree apprenticeships

In addition to this the Institute continues to develop a degree apprenticeship programme with employers, which is awaiting final government approval.
