RTPI President calls on the Prime Minister to back Great British Planners

10 October 2012

In response to the Prime Minister's speech at the Conservative Party Conference, RTPI President Colin Haylock said:

Planners up and down the country, in the private, public, voluntary sectors and in the Planning Inspectorate, are therefore working round the clock in their communities to help deliver housing and growth."

"When we have just showcased to the world what British planners can do in the shape of the Olympic Park and with British Chartered Town Planners exporting what are regarded as world class skills to the fastest growing economies of the world, the British economy needs the Prime Minister to back their efforts. Planners in both the private and public sectors are working hard to make things happen at a time of unprecedented challenge and uncertainty. All those working to deliver development know the key issue is finance.

The facts speak for themselves with statistics from the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) showing that for at least a decade, over 80% of planning applications have been granted and around 90% of major commercial applications (which are critical for economic growth) are successful.
