Western Mail: RTPI CYMRU defends planning system

02 April 2012

Roisin WillmottDear Sir,

Contrary to what was claimed ("Wales 'losing out' as England is quicker to reform planning", 29 March 2012), Wales is not losing out.
Wales already has a single Welsh national policy document, the Planning Policy Wales (PPW). It is true that the PPW is longer than the English National Planning Policy Framework, but the experience in Wales is that the PPW is working effectively and that complex issues often require the certainty and clarity that does not always come with brevity. Devolution should be about more than replicating an English planning system which has been designed with English needs in mind.
We acknowledge that planning system in Wales is not perfect and there is always room for improvement which is why RTPI Cymru and others are working with the Welsh Government to see what should be included in a Planning Bill in 2015 and what can be done to improve the system before then.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Roisin Willmott
National Director, RTPI Cymru
