Act quickly on National Policy Statements, planners tell government

03 July 2009

The RTPI has responded to the CBI's call for the Government to act soon on issuing National Policy Statements. Under the recently passed Planning Act 2008, the Government is obliged to produce National Policy Statements that are meant to make the national case for new infrastructure projects and inform decisions.

RTPI Head of Policy, Matt Thomson said:

\"We agree with the CBI that the government must take speedy action on putting in place National Policy Statements but they must be thought through properly and be locationally specific where possible. The government must also ensure that these relate adequately to each other – so we need a National Spatial Planning Framework to do this.

\"Failure to deliver the National Policy Statements not only hinders investment, but also leaves local communities in the dark as to what infrastructure is needed, what impacts it will have and what benefits it will bring. This inevitably leads to more conflict and delays in delivering the infrastructure needed to benefit the wider community.\"
