RTPI Annual elections on the horizon

03 September 2007

Do you believe in planning and think you could make a difference? What do you think the RTPI should be doing to change people's perception of planning, to improve the system, to focus on what is really important? Could you help to lead this profession maybe one day as President? This is your opportunity to get involved.

The Institute has never been so prominent in the media, providing thought leadership on the big planning issues that face the new Brown government, in newspapers, radio and television. For the RTPI to remain the kind of body that is courted by media organisations, and to retain its ability to make a real difference to decisions made at governmental level, it needs to be represented by a wide cross section of the planning profession, reflecting diversity of all kinds. A depth of experience combined with the zest of new ideas needs to permeate the bodies that influence policy and ultimately decide the future course of the Institute.

Involvement is likely to be a two way street. It may help your career development – enlightened employers will see the mutual benefits that can arise. You may already have experience helping the regions and nations locally, with one of the networks or be a volunteer for Planning Aid.

Initially you may wish to consider standing for General Assembly, the body that debates the current and future issues facing the profession, and which elects the Executive Board.

The Presidential Team consists of members voted in by the wider membership as Junior Vice-President, who go on to become Senior Vice-President, President and Immediate Past President. The only requirement for candidates for Junior Vice-President is that they have served two full years on the General Assembly by the date of their nomination, in order to ensure a high level of understanding of the workings of the RTPI and the issues it faces. The Presidential Team members are automatically members of the Executive Board.

This year we will be asking candidates to provide photographs for the RTPI website along with their supporting statements, to make the whole election process more interactive and, hopefully, more inclusive. The RTPI will benefit if we have keenly fought elections to all the available positions. Will you be a candidate?

Nominations are open from 1 September to 1 October, with ballots taking place from 1 November to 1 December. Further information, and nomination forms for all posts, can be found here, You can also get forms and further information by contacting James Taylor at the RTPI, on 020 7929 8172

The current Presidential Team is; Clive Harridge, Immediate Past President; Jim Claydon, President; Janet O'Neill, Senior Vice President; and Martin Willey, Junior Vice President.
