The European Network was set up by the Yorkshire Branch in the early 90s at a time when the RTPI was encouraging an interest in European planning by producing cassettes explaining the planning systems of various European countries.   Visits to Germany (the Ruhr followed by Berlin), France (Lille) and twice to Silesia (and the Bezirks second time) followed at roughly two to three year intervals.  The programmes include a mixture of lectures and presentations by academics and practitioners, site visits and social activities too – theatre; concerts; and yes, drinking!

In order to encourage students and young planners to take part, the Region has offered bursaries.  Reports on all the visits are published in ‘Root and Branch’.

Not everything we propose actually happens; following a cancelled visit in 2008 to Denmark, subsequent approaches to the Danish Planning Institute have proved in vain.

The Network is open to all RTPI Yorkshire Region Members and the visits, on a largely self-financing basis, are always open too.  In the past, partners have taken part as well as members from other RTPI regions and from other professional bodies (IHBC / RIBA / ILA).
