Born and brought up in Weymouth, Mike graduated from Oxford University with an Honours degree in Geography and a research degree. During his first post at Bristol City Council he studied at home for the RTPI's examinations (prior to the commencement of planning courses at Bristol Polytechnic!) and qualified for corporate membership in the mid- 1970s. Following a secondment to the Government's Severnside Study, Mike returned to the City Council as Research Officer before moving to Avon County Council when it was established in 1974. He remained with Avon throughout its 22 year life in various posts, including the position of the last County Planning Officer. For the following 4 years in the late 1990s he was the part time Planning Officer advising the South West Planning Conference. Throughout his planning career Mike has served the RTPI both at national and regional levels including a period on the national Council as the representative of the RTPI SW Branch, Branch Chairman in 1982 and Branch/Region Secretary for 11 years 1997-2008, a role he has resumed for 2016. For his service to the RTPI, Mike was given the Institute's Outstanding Service Award in 2000.
