Members of RTPI NE’s Regional Activities and Policy Committee recently welcomed John Nielsen, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council North East (CICNE), to their meeting, as part of RTPI NE Chair Joe Ridgeon’s aim to strengthen our relationships with other construction professions in the region.
Besides giving the expected gloomy overview of the depressed state of the industry, John was able to point at one area of work in which the region is at the forefront of developments in construction across the country: BIM (Building Information Modelling). Strongly encouraged by the Government, BIM is expected (eventually) to bring down costs across the construction industry. While initially being introduced primarily by architects, building services and large construction companies, it cannot be too long before planners start having to become familiar with large construction projects making use of BIM technologies rather than traditional plans and drawings.
John Nielsen also mentioned his forthcoming meeting with Ed Twiddy of the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, at which he would again be emphasising the importance of construction in the regional economy.
