2012 Thomas Sharp Lecture

The 2012 Thomas Sharp Memorial Lecture was given by Gillian Darley, the writer, broadcaster and prize-winning architectural journalist, whose topic was be “Ian Nairn: inspired by Newcastle”. The free lecture took place in the Curtis Auditorium, Herschel Building, Newcastle University at 5:30pm on Thursday 18 October.

The lecture provided a look at the brilliant but troubled career of Ian Nairn (1930-1983), whose outspoken attacks on the banality of Britain’s post-war buildings and “Subtopia” made him an inspiration for a generation of architectural critics and town planners. As a well-known journalist and broadcaster Nairn greatly admired Newcastle, and returned to it in print and film on several occasions.

The biennial Thomas Sharp public lectures were established jointly by Newcastle University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and the Northern Branch of the RTPI, in memory of the pioneering countryside planner who was the first Professor of Town Planning at Newcastle University and an early President of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
