Graham Garnham - Outstanding Service Award Presentation

On behalf of the RTPI Vikki van Sylvan, Regional Chair presented Graham Garnham with his Outstanding Service Award.  The committee felt avery well deserved award.

Graham had been a committed and enthusiastic corporate member of the RTPI since 1981. He was our Honorary Treasurer from 2003 to 2015, taking over after a period of some turbulence in the Region's financial position.  During his time, the role Honorary Treasurer was challenging.  In 2008, the unification of Durham and Northumberland reduced the number of Local Planning Authorities and this cut our income.  This also coincided with the economic downturn, which was particularly severely felt in the North East.  Graham developed and secured approval for a series of 3-year financial strategies to see the Region through these difficult times.  With a carefully planned use of reserves, a balanced budget was achieved.  His role as Treasurer meant that he had to occasionally be very firm with ambitions of other members.  This included resisting attempts to spend money that would have placed the region's finances overall at an unacceptable risk.
