RTPI South West are delighted to welcome you back to their popular in-person CPD series, designed to help you further your knowledge, connect with the wider built environment profession and encourage discussion around some of the key issues in planning.

This full day seminar together with the Landscape Institute South West invites you to explore the increasing emphasis given to the natural environment in national and local planning policies following the publication of the Environment Act in November 2021.

Speakers and Topics

1. KEYNOTE
Tim Crawshaw, RTPI President

2.Biodiversity Net Gain – the Need for a Pragmatic Approach
A look at the BNG metric and how this has been applied through some case studies. Plus a discussion on some of the issues this generates and how BNG is working in practice. The talk will also highlight some of the issues/conflicts we’re coming  across from strategic through to detail.
Matt Jones EAD Ecology and Paul Osborne LHC Design

3.  BNG Legal update
The wider legal framework for BNG and addressing questions such as ‘how do covenants for 30 years land management work, and how does that link to S106 / contracts?
Richard Broadbent, Director at Freeths

4.How can you get the most from biodiversity net gain for wider ecosystem services?
Andrew Thompson, Natural England

5. The role of trees in development: BNG and beyond
The BNG has progressively evolved to better account for trees in new development: while hedgerow and  woodland fare relatively well, the accounting of urban trees remains relatively problematic. Here, other policy tools are desirable to achieve good outcomes. The talk will illustrate with project and policy examples.
Anne Jaluzot, Trees and Design Action Group

6. Research – How design codes can contribute to net zero and natures recovery
Information on the research
Frazer Osment, LDA Design’s Chair

7. Setting the context  - Nutrient Neutral Development

  • The big picture, what is being done to improve site condition and will further sites be affected?
  • Mitigation solutions, and how will Natural England provide support.
  • Habitats Regulations, what sectors are affected, and why housing?

Simon Thompson, Principal Adviser – Strategic Solutions at Natural England

Planning for Nutrient Neutrality
Kate Murdoch at Somerset West and Taunton
Oliver Bowers, Pete Thornton Royal Haskoning
