Welcome

The Young Planners' Network was set up by the RTPI to provide a focus for all planning students, RTPI Student members and younger corporate members (under the age of 35) throughout the UK and Ireland.

We are intending to hold events throughout 2011 and therefore if you consider that you may be able to help organise an event in your part of the region, or you may have views as to how the South West could become more active then please do not hesitate to contact ypsouthwest@gmail.com

Planning for Healthy Cities

Tuesday 29th November 2011, 6 - 8pm @ Racks Bar & Kitchen, St Pauls Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1LX

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place RSVP to: ypsouthwest@gmail.com

Concerns over the impacts of development upon health helped to create the foundations for the current planning system. Today this role continues to grow as planners are increasingly required to take health impacts into account and utilise their skills to improve the public health effects of development. Issues such as obesity ensure that this role will only expand in the years to come.

This event will discuss the current relationship between health and planning, the importance of considering health impacts and available assessment methods for doing so as well as seeing how these can be applied in practice. The event will also provide an opportunity for young planners to network within the informal setting of Racks Bar and Kitchen.

Speakers attending the event include:

Professor Hugh Barton - Professor of Planning, Health and Sustainability and Director for Healthy Urban Environments (University of the West of England)
Stephen Hewitt - Specialist Planner in Healthy Living/Health Improvement (Bristol City Council Strategic and Citywide Policy)
Dr Angela Raffle - Consultant in Public Health and Wider Determinants of Health & Sustainability (Bristol Primary Care Trust)

Update on the South West Young Planners Group (SWYP)

The SWYP steering group met on 24 February 2011 to discuss the future for the overall group.  We had a great turn out and some really good ideas for future events.

These are a summary of the ideas that we came up with:

  • training days to exemplar schemes, creating themed days
  • seminar structure with external speakers brought in
  • potential for a ball, possibly in combination with RICS or the Welsh Young Planners Group
  • APC  support
  • pure social events – pub quizzes, sandcastle building at the beach
  • fun runs
  • environmental days – giving time
  • sporting events, inc. 5-a-side football
  • holding the Young Planners Conference in the region in the future.

If anyone has any ideas for events that they would like to see happening then please contact us at ypsouthwest@gmail.com

The SWYP hope to organise lots of events and make 2011 a really active year.  To help us do this and keep in touch better we are also on facebook and Linked In .
