LADIES IN PLANNING (LIP)

In early February a Ladies in Planning event was held at Norman’s bar in Leeds. The event aimed to bring together like-minded individuals in the planning arena to network and share experiences from their working lives. The event was a huge success with around 30 professional women from the private and public sector in attendance, ranging from planners to surveyors. Feedback from the night suggested that the informal setting and wide mix of people made it really enjoyable and we will be looking to host more events in the future.

Ladies in Planning will be in touch about future events and if you would like to be added to our mailing list, come along or offer any suggestions, please contact us at marie-louise.gray@jacobs.com or Catherine.fay@renew-leeds.co.uk.

TODAY AND TOMORROW'S LEADERS' AWARDS 2009

Planning Awards – Celebrating Success

We held our Annual General Meeting in December 2009, which kicked off with an informative presentation from Hull Gateway and Hull City Council about the Newington St Andrews Area Action Plan, winner of our 2009 Yorkshire Region Planning Award.  The team was then presented with a trophy to mark their success.  An article on this project appeared in the Autumn 2009 issue of Root and Branch.

We then presented the President’s Today’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders’ Awards on behalf of the 2009 RTPI President, Martin Willey.  In this region, the award for Today’s Leader was made to Neville Ford of Wakefield MDC, and Tomorrow’s Leader to Bhupinder Dev at Bradford MDC.

Neville Ford’s award recognised his leadership of colleague and partners in developing the local development framework for Wakefield, a pioneer amongst urban authorities in this respect.  Wakefield currently has in place an adopted Core Strategy, Development Policies and Waste Development Plan Documents, and an Area Action Plan for Central Wakefield.  This has significantly helped to place planning at the core of strategic policy decision making.  Neville leads the spatial planning team at the authority, where he has worked since 1986.

Bhupinder Dev currently leads the LDF team at Bradford MDC.  At Bradford, Bhupinder has pioneered new approaches to engagement and participation in plan making, including the use of social networking sites.  Bhupinder’s dedication to planning extends beyond work, and is actively involved in community planning in his local community in Leeds. He has also committed significant amounts of personal time to establishing the YORnet group for young built environment professionals in the region, promoting inter-disciplinary networking, and has also been the region’s Young Planner representative.

The winners were presented with framed certificates and bottles of champagne, generously sponsored by Peter Wilbraham and law firm Cobbetts.

We await confirmation on plans to repeat the Today’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders Awards for 2010.
