RTPI-CIH Planning for Housing Network

Welcome to the joint RTPI-CIH Network
We are delighted that you have visited our Network homepage to find out more about the Joint Network that plays an important part in developing policy, knowledge and good practice for the two Institutes. To the left there are links to pages addressing the distinct planning for housing issues in Scotland and Wales.
The Annual Report 2011 for the Planning for Housing Network is now available.
Members have recently provided content and supporting evidence for several responses to significant Government consultations:
Rural Affordable Housing Incentives
Sustainable New Homes: The road to Zero Carbon: joint RTPI/CIH response
Houses in multiple occupation: consultation on changes
Planning for Traveller Sites - This consultation sought views on a revised draft Planning Policy Statement for traveller sites. With helpful input from Network members the RTPI has now made a submission.

Ways of getting involved
As a ‘club’ of active members, we rely on their voluntary input. We have a new interactive Forum through which we hope members will spark new ideas, exchange views and analysis, thus developing more essential joint thinking between all those engaged with housing policy & provision.
We arrange member events - which may be suggested by Forum contribution or by members direct - since seeing real examples on the ground or discussing initiatives around the same table as the initiators can all help to inform and develop good practice.
We also encourage members to submit information for inclusion in our email bulletin, to host small member events, and to promote dialogue and discussion. Items for the bulletin might include news and information on research projects, events and good practice, or requests for information from other members to help you in your work.
FEBRUARY
Next Member Discussion Meeting:
We must fix it: Delivering reform of the building sector to meet the UK's housing and economic challenges
Date: Tuesday 14th February
Time: 2pm to 4pm (approx.)
Location: RTPI Offices, 41 Botolph Lane, London EC3
The thinktank the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) has been conducting wide-ranging research into housing policy. The latest in their series of reports looks at housing supply - We must fix it: Delivering reform of the building sector to meet the UK's housing and economic challenges. In the long run, the only way to end the UK's chronic housing crisis is to build many more homes. But, the report asks, are Britain's big builders willing and able to deliver the new houses we need?
The author of the ippr report Matt Griffith and ippr Senior Research Fellow Andy Hull will outline their research and lead a discussion of its findings and their implications.
Please book early via this link to ensure a place; the event is free to Network members.
If you would like to make an offer to host an event in 2012 please email housing@rtpi.org.uk.

How can we help?
If you have comments or thoughts on suitable Network activities or events onward then please contact housing@rtpi.org.uk
HOUSING INSIGHTS
By using previously unavailable national housing surveys together with ACORN InSite – which categorises the UK population according to their demographics – Shelter has developed the Shelter Housing Insights for Communities resource to give planners a unique insight into the housing aspirations and attitudes of local people. Planners and house builders will, from now on have a clear understanding of the likelihood of local people to object to or support house building, and the reasons for this.
RURAL HOUSING INTEREST GROUP
A new Interest Group on Rural Housing is beginning to build up web content on the topic. This specialist content is held in the Members Area - see headings to the left. If you too have an interest in planning for rural housing and would like to get involved in the activities of the Interest Group - and receive briefings on matters of relevance and significance - please follow the link or email the Network Manager: housing@rtpi.org.uk
URBAN DESIGN NETWORK CASE STUDIES
The RTPI Urban Design Network has with the help of its members been collating exemplar residential developments where the demands of density and of creating successful settlements have been brought together well and recognised with Awards or other commendations. The Network continues to widen the range of examples but the present set of Case Studies can be viewed via this link.
Climate Change Challenge
Climate change poses a professional challenge to all planners and is prompting changes to the RTPI Vision for Planning. Click here to read the RTPI's seven commitments on climate change launched at the Planning Convention 2009.
