Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I'm Martin Lee, a Chartered Member of the RTPI. I'm Chartered Town & Country Planning Consultant at Stags Professional Services, based in Exeter.
What encouraged you to get involved in Planning Aid England?
A desire to give something back, or, in the words of the movie, "Pay it Forward".
What kinds of activities have you been involved in so far?
I have been involved in Casework which, for the inexperienced or potential volunteer, means directly assisting eligible individuals or community groups in their efforts to navigate their way through a particular aspect of the current planning system.
Cases I have been involved in range from the strategic to the personal
Cases I have been involved in range from the strategic to the personal: at one extreme assisting a community group in making representations in relation to a proposed housing land allocation in an emerging local plan, and at the other helping an individual defend against formal enforcement action by a Local Planning Authority against alleged unauthorised work to a Grade II Listed Building.
How has your volunteering helped your professional development?
Increased variety and greater community involvement, together with networking opportunities.
Do you have any tips or advice for anyone thinking about volunteering?
Time management ... always apply a factor of three to the length of time you think something may take.
