RTPI Employment Law Helpline - An overview

The helpline helps 100s of RTPI members a year by offering confidential advice on a wide variety of workplace issues. We are unable to publish the advice offered due to their confidential nature, but examples of recent enquiries resolved by the helpline are listed below.

  • Case 1

Member called suffering from stress due to extremely heavy workload and working 50+ hours a week. Member has made employer aware & the employer advised the member to delegate, but the member feels there is no one appropriate in the organisation to delegate to. Member is suffering stress-related illnesses and felt he had no one to turn to except his GP.

  • Case 2

Member has been suspended with pay following allegations relating to an inappropriate email criticising fellow colleagues. Member claimed that the employer recognised it did not follow its own disciplinary procedures, and have informally proposed a compromise agreement.

  • Case 3

A member on maternity leave was concerned that her employer is considering a restructure, with possible redundancies. Can she be made redundant whilst on maternity leave?

  •  Case 4

A proposed restructure will reduced two roles down to one. Member and other person both applied, had interview and were both rejected. Both planners are now facing redundancy. Member needed advice to understand what their options might be.

  •  Case 5

Member concerned that her employer is proposing to take out "expert" from "expert witness" as defined in the job description. Member was concerned that if "expert" was removed then it would infer that the member was only a witness and not an expert, therefore devaluing their status as a chartered town planner.
