Starting in private practice

This page is designed to support new and established planning consultants, as well as those members thinking about consultancy.

Starting your own practice

Have you thought about starting your own planning consultancy? Would you like to be your own boss, improve your work/life balance or get real satisfaction from the work you do for others?

Are you nearing retirement and would like to offer advice on an occasional basis? Perhaps you have caring responsibilities, would like to start a family, or are thinking of returning to part-time or full time education? Whatever your circumstance our advice and information can help you decide whether consultancy is for you.

The RTPI Starting in Private Practice good practice guide will take you through the basics, with additional content to the left of this page covering key areas. You can also access informal guidance from established planning consultants through our pilot 'career mentor' service. We have a small number of established consultants who are happy to discuss their own experiences in private practice. For further information please contact chris.sheridan@rtpi.org.uk.

Managing your practice

Have you recently started your own consultancy, or do you currently manage your own successful practice? We provide information and guidance on a range of topics, including PII & risk management, terms of business, surveys & fee rates and small business management guidance.

If you employ staff then our employment law helpline can provide all the employment advice you need.

Join the Independent Consultants Network and benefit from the experiences of others. We also survey members of the network on a wide range of issues relating to their practice and their professional outlook.

We also provide a series of management guidance notes to support you in managing your own planning practice. This content can be found under Management Guidance and Information.
