Our programme of events covered an incredibly wide range over the course of the year, from major National conferences to seminars and roundtables, from sparkling annual dinners to pub quizzes and five-a-side tournaments. From Fraserburgh to Yeovil, the RTPI offered members the opportunity to hear from government Ministers, academics and leading practitioners. Responding to feedback from delegates, our Regions and Nations are organising an increasing number of half-day CPD events, which offer greater flexibility and maximise the effectiveness of time out of the office.
Looking beyond the UK, the RTPI organised a joint UK-German seminar in ‘Larger than Local’ issues in Hannover, took part in the American Planning Association Conference in Los Angeles and organised a high-profile networking event in Naples at World Urban Forum 6. We also ran an online conference on the role of public spaces to mark World Town Planning Day, with partners in the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa, and continued to support the Global Planners Network.
Among our key annual events, this year’s PIPA Conference in Derby looked at how to deliver local planning, while the first NAPE Conference in Wales took place in Cardiff. The Young Planners Conference in London was a sell-out success and the RTPI Nathaniel Lichfield Lecture series continued, following 2011 speaker Professor Patsy Healey with APA President Mitch Silver. The 2012 Planning Convention, in a new one-day format, was fully booked and closed with a keynote address from Minister for Decentralisation and Cities, The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP.
