This year we have refreshed the RTPI’s International strategy, focusing on exercising our corporate social responsibility towards planning and planners elsewhere in the world and showing the international relevance of UK planning policy.
We have hosted visits of planners from Japan, Norway, Australia, Indonesia and Turkey, including two at the request of United Nations agencies, as well as promoting the RTPI’s international commitments to RTPI Regions and to students at planning schools in Ireland.
In 2012, RTPI International has organised a joint UK-German seminar in Hannover on ‘Larger than Local’ planning issues. We also took part in the annual meeting of the APA (American Planning Association) in Los Angeles, which this year had a special Global Planners Network Congress ‘track’. We attended World Urban Forum 6 (the biennial UN-HABITAT world planning conference) in Naples, where we organised a high-profile networking event there for the Global Planners Network. With partners in the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa, the RTPI organised the annual online conference to mark World Town Planning Day in November on the theme ‘Going Public – the role of public spaces in spatial planning’. We continue to support the Global Planners Network, including editing its newsletter.
In 2013, we will be producing a guide to overseas planning consultancy, offering support to planners considering this area of work. The RTPI is part of the organising committee for the IFHP (International Federation for Housing and Planning) Centenary Congress in London, and we will have a role in marking this key event in the run-up to our own centenary in 2014.
