The quality of planning research at UK universities will be assessed by the higher education funding councils through the 2012 Research Excellence Framework. A Sub-Panel for Architecture, the Built Environment and Planning will be responsible for ensuring that the necessary criteria are developed and rigorously applied. While the Sub-Panel is largely made up of academic researchers, practitioners with experience and understanding of the use of research in practice are also included. The Sub-Panel will undoubtedly directly influence the future of the planning discipline and indirectly influence its impact on professional education and practice.
Sub-Panel membership
In 2010, the funding councils invited the RTPI, along with other bodies, to put forward nominations for membership of the Sub-Panel. Following the appointment of Professor Alan Penn, of University College London, to chair of the panel, the list of 22 panel members has now been confirmed. RTPI members David Adams, Simin Davoudi, Cecilia Wong, Will McKee and Katie Williams represent the planning discipline in the panel's work.
