ESPON Open Seminar

ESPON is holding an Open Seminar in Hungary from 21-22 June 2011 in cooperation with the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The conference will consider the evidence and knowledge needs for the Territorial Agenda 2020 and EU Cohesion Policy. Further details and registration information can be found on the ESPON website.

Conference on the Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation Funding

A conference aimed at those interested in the development of the next Strategic Framework Programme for Research and Innovation in the EU is being held on 10 June 2011 in Brussels. Making the case for participatory TIA

Researchers at the University of Liverpool are currently leading the ESPON EATIA (ESPON and Territorial Impact Assessment) project. An article published in Town and Country Planning magazine explains the background to the project, and highlights its aim to develop a policy-maker-friendly TIA framework. Read the article.

ESPON focus on energy

In an interview with the ESPON Coordination Unit, policy makers recently emphasised the ways in which they can make use of the findings outlined in the ReRISK project. Read the interview here.

New ESPON project reports online

The ESPON ARTS draft final report is now available and Cliff Hague from the UK ESPON Contact Point has produced a useful commentary on it. The project has developed a method of carrying out territorial impact assessment of EU Directives and has applied it to twelve Directives. Read the UK ESPON Contact Point commentary.

SEMIGRA (Selective Migration and Unbalanced Sex Ratio in Rural Regions) has also recently delivered its Inception Report. The project is focusing on developing territorial development strategies to deal with selective migration, and to stabilise social development.

Wisetrip journey planner

The EU-funded Wisetrip project has developed an integrated journey planner which helps travellers plan end-to-end journeys using several means of transport including train, bus and plane. The service is currently available for a limited number of international and national routes within Greece, Finland, Italy, China and the UK. Find out more.

Calls for papers

Future Cities 2011 International Symposium

The Future Cities 2011 conference is being held in London from 15-16 December 2011. Papers are welcomed on policy themes including the city of neighbourhoods; the city of enterprise; the sporting city; and the healthy city. Abstracts must be submitted by 1 June 2011. Find out more.

Regional Studies Association Conference presentations and papers published

The Regional Studies Association Conference took place from 16-18 March in Slovenia and considered the future of cohesion policy. The papers and presentations from the day are now available. ESPON projects such as ESPON Climate and KIT were presented.

International perspectives and challenges for British practice

The Sam Romaya Memorial Lecture will be given by Ben Hamilton-Baillie, Director of Hamilton-Baillie Associates Ltd. He is a member of the expert team for the EU project Shared Space, which is aimed at integrating traffic with other forms of human activity. The lecture takes place on 10 May in Cardiff. Spatial development in Europe 2020

Registration is open for the ARL Congress Scientific Plenary Session. The conference is being held in Bremen, Germany, from 16-17 June 2011 and will discuss European spatial planning over the coming decade. Find out more and register.

Fostering smart growth in cities and regions

This years Regions for Economic Change Conference takes place in Brussels from 23-24 June 2011. The event will highlight projects from cities and regions which aim to generate policy learning and demonstrate the contribution of regional policy to the Europe 2020 goals. View the full programme.
