First ESPON conference for targeted analyses stakeholders
The ESPON Programme is holding its first High Level Conference focused on Targeted Analyses for Stakeholders on 11 May 2011 in Brussels. The event will consider the use of territorial evidence in practice, and will provide the opportunity to share experience on added value and use of evidence provided by Targeted Analyses. Register by 29 April 2011 to attend.
ESPON-INTERSTRAT workshops in the UK and Ireland
The UK ESPON Contact Point held an interactive workshop on 1 April in Edinburgh. The event focused on how outputs from the ESPON Programme can be used in the development of Scottish strategic planning policy, and how ESPON research outputs can be made more accessible for practitioners. Another recent workshop organised by the Irish ESPON Contact Point in collaboration with the UK ESPON Contact Point considered the practical issues relating to planning for functional territories, and focused on cross-border contexts in particular. Discussion centred on the experience of Newry and Dundalk as a functional territory, and Cliff Hague's recent blog looks more at this issue.
ESPON launches two Calls for Tenders
ESPON has opened two Calls for Tenders. The Online Map Finder is aimed at developing a web application that can be used to store, search, find, display, zoom in and out, print and download maps produced by ESPON projects. Further details can be found on the ESPON website. Tenders must be submitted by 14h00 (CEST) on 28 April 2011.
The second Call refers to the Creative Workforce and requires the updating of maps and data on the creative workforce as an indicator of innovation. More information can be found on the ESPON website. All tenders must be received by 12h00 (CEST) on 29 April 2011.
Update on the latest ESPON call
The 8th ESPON Call closed on 21 March 2011, and attracted a total of 53 applications from 29 different countries. Twenty-three proposals were submitted under Priority 1; twenty-nine under Priority 2 and one under Priority 3. Successful applicants will be informed once the Monitoring Committee have made its decision in June.

A new series of articles on Commissioner Hahns web pages will look at a different European region each week. The articles will consider the regions situation and priorities, the way EU regional funding is being used, and give project examples. The current 'region of the week' is Puglia.
New confederation gives voice to Europes small towns
The Confederation of Small Towns and Municipalities of the European Union (CTME) was recently launched in Brussels. The association aims to ensure that the voices of Europes small and medium-sized towns are heard at European level, and their interests are fully represented. Find out more.

Founding territorial sciences
The International College of Territorial Sciences is organising an international conference on Founding territorial sciences in Paris from 23-25 November 2011. Proposals are invited on themes such as defining territorial sciences; territorial information; mobilities, identities and territories; and territories and health. European research on environment and health an update
A new report produced by the European Commission describes seventy-nine projects selected from the first three calls for proposals launched by the European Commission in the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. The projects outlined address a number of scientific issues such as the health impacts of climate change. Read the full report.
European Environment Agency analyses land use change
A recent assessment by the European Environment Agency (EEA) analyses land use change in Europe, and concludes that an integrated policy approach based on reliable data is needed to deal with differing sectoral demands and manage land sustainability. Read the EEA's report.

Evidence on European land use
An ESPON workshop, organised in cooperation with the ESPON project EU-LUPA, is being held on 24 May 2011 in Brussels. The EU-LUPA project aims to enable a better understanding of land use dynamics, change, and current land use patterns. The workshop aims to share experience, transfer knowledge, and contribute to the debate on land use in Europe. More details and registration information can be found on the ESPON website. Intelligent mobility ITS for sustainable transport in urban regions
The 8th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) European Congress takes place from 6-9 June 2011 in Lyon, France. The event will consider intelligent mobility ITS for sustainable transport of persons and goods in urban regions, with particular focus on topics such as co-modal urban transport management, governance and business issues, and ITS for adaptive and resilient cities. Green and blue space adaptation for urban areas and eco-towns project final conference
The Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco-towns (GRaBS) project holds its final conference on 8 June 2011 in London. The conference will focus on how green and blue infrastructure can help areas adapt to projected climate change scenarios, and consider the development of a Risk and Vulnerabilities Assessment Tool. Adapting to coastal change: local perspectives
A conference organised under the auspices of the INTERREG IVB NWE Project, Innovative Management for Europes Changing Coastal Resource (IMCORE) takes place from 13-14 September 2011 in The Hague. Open Days 2011
