SWANSEA’S ON-LINE PHONE MAST REGISTER - A FIRST FOR WALES?
19-Jun-07
Looking for a model of good practice on mobile phone masts? Need an innovative solution to managing related information? Well, if so, it is worth taking a look at Swansea Council‘s recently launched online Telecommunications Register: http://www.swansea.gov.uk/telecommasts Developed in partnership with the Mobile Operators Association (MOA), the system is designed to provide 24/7 access for Council Officers, Councillors, Mobile Phone Operators and the public, to information on the site location, operator(s), planning history, and technical details of all mobile phone masts and other equipment in Swansea.
Searching the Register couldn’t be simpler. Users can navigate around an interactive map of Swansea, zooming in and out, and, by clicking on the mast site(s) they are interested in, call up on screen a wide range of information - including a photograph, location plan, mast specification, and information on the planning application/decision. Alternatively, the user can search by Electoral Ward, operator name or by planning decision type, simply by clicking on their choice from a drop-down list. And the options don’t stop there. Searches can also be carried out by post code, planning application reference, and key words. The system also allows users to view areas and sites that have been identified by operators for the possible future location of masts, for which no formal application has been submitted.
