The IDN aims to:

• enhance awareness of international issues in planning with a particular emphasis on developing countries
• encourage and facilitate the two–way transfer of planning knowledge and expertise between developing and developed countries
• help members by giving them information, advice, contacts, news and references which will develop and maintain their interest and their professional competence, whether as part of their regular job or in pursuit of their professional development
• provide a forum for discussion of problems relating to development
• share good practice, solutions and case studies
• identify opportunities for service, training and mutual help
• develop a programme of research on planning and development
• enable members to contribute to RTPI advice to government and other bodies
• raise the profile and status of the RTPI, its members and the planning agenda
• promote the interests of planners and planning through the provision of a voice at international, national, regional and local level.
