PRESERVATION THROUGH NEW PURPOSE

2010

The year started slowly with the first planned event, Politicians in Planning, cancelled because of low numbers.  A small turn-out for 'Beating the Recession' was surprising, but participants felt the evening was very worthwhile.  As the General Election loomed closer, pressures on everyone became obvious, and the programme slowed to reflect this.

May saw Sustainable Rural Communities - Chasing a Myth? held in Andover.

Then followed the visit by Ann Skippers, and an event on National Parks in the 21st Century.

Early July, and a coastal event -

Development & Coastal Change - De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill

The Annual Enforcement Update was held in September this year, and followed by another favourite - the Annual Legal Update - in October.

November saw Planning for Administrators, followed by snow which disrupted the David Fryer Annual Lecture, held this year in December.

The Awards and AGM evening at Eton Rowing Lake was another successful and enjoyable evening.  Sponsors of the 2010 event included Adams Hendry Consulting of Winchester, Brighton University, Peak Quality Homes of Farnham and Reading University.  For full details and photos, please click here.

And finally Creating Low Emission Transport Options from Development Planning, held at the Hilton Hotel, Gatwick Airport.

November 09

A joint event with the Oxford Chamber of Commerce looked at 'Recession, Recovery and the Future of Regional Planning'.

The David Fryer Memorial Lecture was given this year by Dr Richard Simmons of CABE, and was attended by over 150 people.  His lecture was entitled "Is Design just Bollards?" and was thought-provoking and informative.

The Annual General Meeting and Awards evening followed, and was attended by a good audience including Martin Willey, RTPI President.  Wine Tasting and good food were enjoyed by all.

October 09

Landmark Chambers was again the venue for another interesting Legal Update by two of their young barristers.  This annual event included the favourite top ten recent cases, and a lively discussion followed!

September 09

Enforcement issues proved a popular draw, and this event run by RTPI South East and the National Association for Planning Enforcement, was fully booked.  The audience, from both the public and private sectors, heard about current issues in planning enforcement from several different speakers.

Presentations from this event are available.

March 09

The annual 'Planning for Administrators' event was held this year in Basingstoke.  It was fully booked, proving once again that this type of training is much appreciated.

November 08

November saw the David Fryer Memorial Lecture, given by Sir David King to a packed house.  The annual legal update was held later in the month, and the year was rounded off by a very successful evening of awards, AGM and dinner on board the Princess Caroline, Ocean Village, Southampton.

June 08

The President, Janet O'Neill, visited North Kent and Folkestone for two enjoyable days, meeting planners, politicians and many others.

The Region joined with the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce for 'A Review of Key Trends in National & Regional Policy', speakers were Phil Grant (Policy, RTPI) and Vincent Goodstadt (Past President, RTPI).  It is hoped this will become an annual event.

May 08

Another 'Planning for Administrators' event was held in Oxford, with a selection of speakers talking about all aspects of planning.  The day was enjoyed by all, despite appalling weather for the afternoon site visit!

April 08

Young Planners met with Jacqui Ward to talk about the APC.

March 08

The year started with an event delivered by Atlas on Planning Performance Agreements. The event  explored the PPA concept including pros and cons and when to use them, informed by perspectives of practitioners currently working with them.  This was followed by 'Planning the South East - A Single Regional Strategy', a joint event with SEERA, and speakers addressed a packed audience to talk about proposals for a single regional strategy in the sub-national review of economic development and regeneration.
