The School

The mission of the School is to build on its teaching and research excellence in developing an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to researching and teaching all aspects of architecture, planning, urban design, digital architecture and landscape architecture. In particular the School is building on its existing international strengths in urban regeneration, urban design, environmental sustainability, cities and technology, material culture, international development and construction informatics. The broad emphasis of the School is on making and sustaining places which enhance the quality of life for present and future generations. From our analytical work on understanding contemporary places and place-making to our wide-ranging teaching in planning and design, the School forges new approaches to creating exciting synergies between education, practice and policy-making in the promotion of social cohesion, environmental sustainability and economic development.

Teaching

The Schools offers first class teaching, with excellent facilities, in architecture, planning, urban design, digital architecture and landscape architecture.  We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses plus research degrees.  Our architecture and planning courses are both fully accredited by the RIBA and RTPI respectively and our research cohorts is one of the largest in the University, with over 90 students from 31 different countries currently registered in the School.

Research

The School has a dynamic research programme incorporating a wide range of expertise around the theme of the design, development and habitation of towns, cities and regions in a rapidly globalising, technically sophisticated, and culturally diverse social and physical world. Collectively, our research objective explores the social, political, technical and physical construction of space and place in the past, present and future.  High quality and cross-disciplinary research is undertaken in the School’s five research centres.

Drawing on our excellent reputation for high quality research, the School has a successful track record in delivering enterprise projects for a variety of agencies.  With the support of the University’s own dedicated consultancy support service we have undertaken enterprise projects in areas as diverse as social inclusion and homelessness; environmental sustainability; post-disaster reconstruction and urban planning in developing countries; surveillance and government and the quality of urban space, to name a few.

We are keen to expand our business partnerships and knowledge transfer opportunities.  For more details on this please visit: http://www.apl.ncl.ac.uk/enterprise/enterprise.html
