Tyne and Wear
Tyne and Wear comprises five metropolitan districts: two cities (Sunderland – the largest – and Newcastle) and three districts (Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside). The five districts are all unitary councils in the sense that they carry out the full range of local government functions, including planning, regeneration, education, social services and economic development.
The five Tyne and Wear Districts work together in many ways, including their joint sponsorship of Tyne and Wear Research & Information (www.tyne-wear-research.gov.uk ), which holds a wide range of information covering all five districts.
Each of the five districts also has its own web-site: www.sunderland.gov.uk , www.newcastle.gov.uk , www.gateshead.gov.uk , www.northtyneside.gov.uk and www.southtyneside.gov.uk .
Newcastle and Gateshead work closely together on a range of matters, including tourism and culture, see www.newcastlegateshead.com .
The population of Tyne and Wear is just over 1.08 million. The City of Sunderland (which includes Washington New Town) is the largest district, with a population of over 283,000, whilst Newcastle’s population is over 266,000. Gateshead comes next (191,000), followed by North Tyneside (190,000) and South Tyneside (151,000).
