Welcome to the East of England Young Planners page, where we will keep you up-to-date with the latest activities and events for Young Planners in the Region. If you want more information, please get in touch with the Young Planners Liaison Officer, Robert Hobbs.

East of England Young Planners Update

At present the region has four local groups:

  • Cambridgeshire,
  • Haven Gateway,
  • Hertfordshire, and
  • Norfolk.

Successful events have already taken place and more are being organised.

The profile of the Young Planners’ Network continues to grow as we become ever more involved as a Network in influencing RTPI activity. Recently the Network commented on the Institute’s ‘Planning to Live with Climate Change’ consultation thanks to the efforts of the young planner on the Executive Board, Charlie Collins of Savills in Southampton.

On 12 May 2009, Rob Hobbs attended a National Young Planners’ Network Steering Group meeting, which was attended by all of the Regional and National Young Planner Representatives. Once again this was a very productive meeting as representatives shared ideas amongst each other. Two events of note are the young planners’ event to be held in between the Planning Convention in London, and the annual national conference to be held in Newcastle later in the year.

Events

The Planning Convention event will be held on the evening of Thursday 18 June and will be a joint event between the East of England, London, and the South Coast young planners’. The event format will be a walking tour followed by drinks. You do not have to attend the Planning Convention to attend this event and further details will be available shortly.

The Annual National Young Planners' Conference will be held this year at the Castlegate Centre in Newcastle on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October. The theme is Partnership or Conflict: How positive stakeholder engagement can help create better places. Last year’s conference at Brighton was a great success enjoyed by all and this year promises to be just as successful. Ensure you put the dates in your diary now for what is a fun and interesting event, which is also great CPD.

At a regional level, we held a very interesting event on water efficiency in Norwich in April, with young planners’ travelling from afar afield as Colchester and Ipswich. Forthcoming events over the summer are intended for Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich so keep an eye on the website for further details. An event is also planned to tie in with the President’s visit in September on the evening of Thursday 17 September so keep an eye out for further details.

Finally, I would just like to mention once more the “Today’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders” Award. Please think about nominating those young planners’ for either award who you feel represent Today’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders.
