The RTPI is now accepting applications from anyone who would like to become an associate member.  Introducing the new class of membership, past president Clive Harridge said: “I am delighted to be able to launch this as one of my last responsibilities as president. The RTPI’s vision of spatial planning is as an inclusive activity that extends far beyond statutory land-use planning.  Associate membership is a way of recognising the achievements of the many diverse professionals who come together to create successful sustainable communities.”

Associate membership is a partial professional qualification, awarded in recognition of the applicant’s academic achievement and professional experience in spatial planning in its broadest sense. This might appeal to:

  • UK planners who do not hold an accredited qualification.
  • Planners whose initial professional education was overseas.
  • Teachers and researchers involved in planning and its related fields.
  • Members of other allied built environment professional institutes engaged with spatial planning.
  • Professionals whose work includes a significant proportion of spatial planning activity.

Application is by means of a written report that reflects on how the candidate’s experience has influenced or engaged with the spatial planning agenda. The first deadline for acceptance of applications is 2 March.

Through this class, associate members can demonstrate that their professional achievements are recognised by the UK’s professional body for spatial planning. Associate members are also able to take advantage of a full range of membership benefits aimed at providing workplace support, professional development and networking opportunities.

This year, the RTPI will also be developing and consulting on a structured route from associate through to chartered membership. An outline of these proposals can be seen on the associate member pages of the RTPI website.

RTPI president Jim Claydon welcomes the new class: “It is essential that the institute engages with a broad range of spatial planning professionals and offers structured routes to chartered status that can recognise the many diverse ways of entering the planning profession.”
