Hartlepool’s Vacant Shops

27-Nov-11

According to BBC Newsnight and retail analysts the Local Data Company, Hartlepool is one of six towns having the highest proportion of vacant shops in Great Britain. (The others are Dewsbury, Dudley, Margate, Stockport and West Bromwich.) The towns have vacancy rates of between a quarter and a third of all stores. The analysis results from data collected between January and June 2011. According to Mary Portas, who is advising the government on how to halt the decline of the High Street,“There are some towns where it is dead; the horse has bolted.”
