RTPI-CIH Planning for Housing Network visit to Newhall, Harlow

The first Network event for 2011in March offered members the chance to see first-hand a new neighbourhood development at Newhall that is described as ‘where design, community and ecology work as one’. Our grateful thanks to Studio Real, the Newhall masterplanners, who facilitated the visit.

Newhall is a new community on the outskirts of Harlow in Essex. Approximately 20% of the new neighbourhood is now complete, with Phase 2 about to commence on site. It has already won several Awards; the judges for the RTPI Award said:
‘It is really refreshing to see a development in which buyers have an opportunity to choose homes for the 21st century rather than being restricted to a menu of properties with distorted echoes of the past. We consider that this Award should provide inspiration to others wishing to create new communities of character and to change the public perception of the appearance of large areas of housing.’
