The Royal Town Planning Institute Silver Jubilee Cup
05-Feb-10
This silver goblet, hallmarked in Sheffield in 1895, is typical of those awarded as trophies in Victorian and Edwardian sporting events, and was donated to the Institute in 1977 by Tom Clarke, a Past President.
It was originally won around the turn of the century by Tommy, an Olympic all-round athlete, was prized and polished for 39 years by Grace, his widow, and her sister Laura and would, in due course, have been passed on to his great grandson Tom, had he not died aged 2½ in Jubilee Year.
Because they, above all, would wish their old cup to serve some useful purpose rather than become tarnished over the years, it is given in their memory, to the Royal Town Planning Institute to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
It is to be awarded annually to a group judged by the Institute to have been responsible for an outstanding planning achievement.
It is hoped that this will help to stimulate innovation and resourcefulness in the planning field and help to widen the application of new and beneficial ideas.
