05-Mar-10

Richard Kingston, at the University of Manchester’s Planning School is carrying out a survey of planners to assess the current level of GIS skills and expertise within the profession with the view to improving the teaching of GIS and spatial literacy to better match the requirements placed on professional planners.survey picture

The on-line survey will help inform a better understanding of the levels of spatial literacy within the profession, as assessed by planning professionals themselves. It also examines current approaches for providing continuing professional development in spatial literacy and will map out the perceived differences between spatial literacy teaching and the actual needs of planning practitioners. The outcomes from the survey, together with those from a series of workshops and interviews currently underway, will contribute to improving how spatial literacy teaching can enhance students learning in order to equip spatial planning students with competitive and useful skills.

The survey closed on 5 March 2010.
