GPNs are being prepared to update and develop the guidance previously available in the Practice Advice Note (PAN) series.  New topics for advice are also being developed within the structure of the strategy.

Current GPNs and Related Titles

  Supporting effective community involvement, illustrated in four case studies. (Revised July 2007)
• GPN2: Consultancy by Current and Former Public Sector Employees
  Practice and conduct issues raised by taking on a consultancy role. (June 2006)
• GPN3: Personal Safety at Work
  Risk assessment, avoiding conflict and carrying out safer site visits and meetings. (November 2006)
• GPN4: Planning for Gypsies and Travellers
  A series of 4 practice notes advising on communication, consultation and participation, accommodation needs assessment, plan policy, allocation, development management and enforcement. (February 2007)
• GPN5: Delivering Healthy Communities NEW!
  Encourages recognition of health issues within planning and raises awareness of how the planning and health sectors should work together. (Due for publication late 2008)
• GPN7: Gender and Spatial Planning
  Building on the 2003 RTPI Gender Toolkit, this practice note examines how gender issues should be considered in spatial planning. (December 2007)
• GPN8: Extra Care Housing
  Within the context of RTPI work on housing for an ageing population, undertaken in close liaison with the Department of Health, this practice note advises on the planning implications of this new housing form. (October 2007)
• Planning Together: Planning and Local Strategic Partnerships
  Guidance published jointly by RTPI and CLG aims to improve collaboration between planners and those involved in LSPs. (January 2007)

Different legislation and practice topics are relevant to different nations.  All GPNs state clearly whether they are of general application, or relate to a particular nation. 

GPNs are kept under continuous review.  Updates can be disseminated in via the website more quickly than in a printed document.  Therefore members are encouraged access GPNs from this page, in preference to keeping printed copies.

The RTPI also cooperates with government departments and other organisations to produce joint practice advice.  Sometimes this is published by the partner body and so is not within the GPN series.  However, its weight and value to members is equivalent to that of a GPN.

If you do not find a subject covered by a current GPN, it may be addressed in a Practice Advice Note (PAN) or other good practice publication that is still available to members. The RTPI signpost service is being developed to provide helpful links to advice provided by others.  The practice home page also has links to education and training activities that may be of assistance. 

PRACTICE ADVICE NOTES (PANs) AND OTHER PRACTICE DOCUMENTS

All existing RTPI practice advice titles have been reviewed.  This review has identified:

• PANs and other documents that provide advice with ongoing relevance                            
• PANs that are now cancelled                                                             

In the medium term all remaining PANs will be replaced with a GPN or signposted advice.
