Colin Haylock elected as RTPI Junior Vice- President

The Royal Town Planning Institute has announced that Colin Haylock has been elected by RTPI members as Junior Vice-President, beginning in 2010. He will become President of the Institute in 2012, becoming the public face of the planning profession in a year when the world will be watching a regeneration and legacy-based Olympics, delivered through a recession.

Colin is a design and regeneration-based planner and architect, with more than 20 years of regional, national and network service with the institute and 35 years of public and private sector experience. He is Urban Design Director at Ryder Architecture, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne – the first President to be based in the North East since 1945.

Colin Haylock said:
“I’m delighted to have been elected to this role at a time when planning will feature strongly in the political and environmental agendas. Climate change and economic recovery are major issues we face and I’m looking forward to ensuring that the RTPI and its members are central to providing solutions to these challenges.”

Colin’s priorities for his presidency will be:

  • Using the opportunity of hosting the Olympic Games to showcase sustainable regeneration both in London and across the UK
  • A fantastic opportunity to help more people ‘get’ what planning can do in offering visions of the future and developing and delivering them.
  • Working with the government of the day to refine plan-making and day to day planning processes – with the aim of really involving local people in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods. Building on the strengths of the Planning Aid service will allow the Institute to take a leading role in this.

Enriching the Institute’s working relationships with Government, professional Institutes, other key bodies and local communities.
