Rural Planning

The RTPI is part of the Rural Coalition, chaired by Matthew Taylor MP and formed in collaboration with Action with Communities in Rural England, the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Country Land and Business Association, the Local Government Association and the Town and Country Planning Association.
In September 2009 the Rural Coalition released The Future is Rural Too! as part of a campaign to recognise rural communities as a vital part of a sustainable future for the UK. The Rural Coalition believes that our countryside is in urgent need of a new vision that should emerge democratically from rural communities.
This Document highlights:
- Vibrant villages: balancing the protection of the historic environment with sustainable managed change
- Thriving economies: recognising the positive contribution that economic development can make to the local and national community
- Flourishing towns: ensuring housing growth is supported by traditional town centre services including local enterprises, local shops, communal open spaces, schools, public transport, doctors’ surgeries, pubs and playgrounds.
- Great local services: rural services tailored to local needs
- Empowering communities: local communities have a far greater understanding of their needs and given the opportunity to shape and take the decisions, supported and facilitated by councils with the powers and capability to help them do it, will be far more sensitive to the value and potential impact of proposed change, and more willing to contribute their own efforts to making it happen.
